I do some appellate work (working on one now), and one thing juegds look for in any brief is an explication of the standard of review. I remember in law school getting asked as much about the standard of review, and why that standard was applicable and appropriate in a particular case, as about the law applicable to the controversy itself. I know you have covered that generally, but a short section of abuse of discretion and summary judgment/demurrer/motion to dismiss standards and the like might be helpful. Otherwise, I think that essay would be valuable to any first year.
