CJI Dipak Misra has appealed to the lawyers not to seek unnecessary adjournments causing delay in the disposal of the cases.
He further added that judiciary was making all out effort to ensure speedy justice with the High Courts working on the weekends to adjudicate the old cases on priority basis.
CJI while addressing the lawyers in the Supreme Court lawns on the Constitution Day celebration stated that the pendency had gone down during last two and half months since he took over rein of the judiciary and sought cooperation from the advocates to “tame the tiger” of pendency.
CJI Misra said that,”Pendency in Supreme Court has reduced by 3,000 in last two months and 25 days and the HC’s have also disposed off 1,100 cases while taking up the cases on Saturday in last two months”.
AG KK Venugopal states that more judges needed to be appointed to deal with the huge pendency of the cases as the number of judges per million population was lowest in the country which was root cause of delay.
Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Govt. appointed record number of judges last year in the HCs and SC and it was for judiciary to take the steps to fill up 5,000 vacancies in the subordinate courts.
