DU professor G N Saibaba and 4 others were sentenced to life in jail today by the Gadchiroli Sessions Court, after being found guilty of helping a banned Maoist group.
A 6th convict was sentenced to ten years in jail.
All these convicts were convicted under rigorous Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
Saibaba, a wheelchair-bound English professor was arrested by Gadchiroli police in May 2014 on the charges of allegedly being member of a banned terrorist organization (CPI-Maoist). He was accused of providing logistics support & helping in recruitment for that group.
Saibaba’s arrest was opposed by Arundhati Roy.
Saibaba told that he’ll comment on his conviction only after speaking to his lawyers. All 6 accused, including were present in the court today during the sentencing.
Police alleged that the professor was acting as an over the ground worker for the banned organization & was running an organization that was acting as a front for CPI (Maoist).
