On Thursday, CM Mamata Banerjee has responded defiantly to the Calcutta HC’s order revoking West Bengal Govt’s decision to disallow Durga idol immersion on same day as Muharram.
She quoted that,”Someone can slit my throat but no one can tell me what to do”.
While nullifying the order, the Division Bench of HC, headed by Justice Rakesh Tiwary, allowed Durga immersions till 12 am on September 30 and has asked State Govt. to ensure that there are separate routes for immersion and tazia processions.
HC Bench advised the Government to learn from the Mumbai Police how to manage situation when the Ganesh Idol immersion and Muharram fell on same day.
High Judge rebuked State Government for using what they called excessive power and expounded that,”Just because you are State, you can’t issue the arbitrary orders and use the extreme power without any basis”.
