NGT refuses to lift ban on 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR

September 14,2017:

Ban was imposed on noting that Diesel Vehicles are the prime source of Air Pollution in Delhi.

Pollution Woes

National Green Tribunal  has dismissed Centre’s plea seeking modification of its order banning the ten-year-old diesel vehicles in the Delhi-NCR.

Tribunal  expounded that the emissions from the Diesel Vehicles is carcinogenic in nature and that one diesel vehicle causes pollution equivalent to the 24 petrol vehicles or otherwise 40 CNG vehicles.

NGT Bench headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar declined the Government’s plea on ground that SC has also junked the similar plea.

NGT further stated that Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which had sought modification of the NGT’s April 7, 2015 order, did not file any review plea and moved Tribunal in guise of seeking a modification.

NGT bench which delivered judgement also comprised Justice Jawad Rahim, Justice R S Rathore and one expert member B S Sajwan.

Centre had opposed the ban submitting that there was a “misconception” that only the diesel pollutes the environment.

Green Panel had issued an order in 2016 directing Delhi RTO to de-register all the diesel vehicles operating in city that were over 10 years old.
