SC allows admission to IIT’s and NIT’s on basis of merit list, vacates its stay order

July 10, 2017

On Monday, the Apex Court allowed IITs, NITs & other engineering colleges to go ahead with their admission process on the basis of JEE merit list & vacated its stay order given on Friday.

SC Complex, N.Delhi

A 3 judge bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra upheld IIT decision to award 18 bonus points awarded to all the students for the wrong questions in JEE (advance).

On Friday, the SC had found faults in IIT’s decision to award 18 bonus marks to each & every student for wrong & vague questions in the Entrance Examination (Advanced) paper; & stayed the ongoing counselling/admission in IITs, NIITs, IIITs & all govt-funded engineering colleges.

Bench was examining IIT’s decision to award 18 bonus marks to all the candidates i.e. 11 marks for incorrect questions in Paper II & 7 marks for incorrect questions in Paper I; irrespective of whether candidate attempted these said questions or not.

The Attorney general K.K. Venugopal, appearing for IIT had ruled out re-evaluation of answer papers saying it’s not possible as 2,50,000 students had taken the examination.

He further added that 2 wrong questions were there in only 1 out of 10 sets of question papers which was in Hindi Medium & it’s impossible to find out students who opted to take the entrance examination in Hindi. He said that there’s only 2 practical options available — either to continue with bonus marks or strike out the wrong questions.
Attorney general Venugopal said that “Till date more than 33 thousand have already taken admission & whole process’d have to be started afresh if merit list is revised.”
