Committee was told by the Govt. that there are no plans to make Aadhaar number mandatory for booking of Air tickets.
Queries by the members of the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Home Affairs were answered by the representatives of the Home Ministry & Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which is the the nodal authority for Aadhaar in India.
This was conveyed to the Parliament’s Standing Committee headed by P. Chidambaram by Officials led by Union Home Secretary-designate Rajiv Gauba.
Parliamentarians were assured by the officials that the Aadhaar data was safe & there’s no chance of it falling in wrong hands as the main server was placed in a foolproof system.
When MPs asked why the govt. was linking Aadhaar no. with mobile connections, banks, welfare schemes they said that this decision had been taken by the political executive & they weren’t in a position to answer it.
Officials told that a final decision on the privacy issues related to Aadhaar would be taken only after a verdict of the Apex Court, which is hearing the case related to privacy.
